OUR OVERVIEW

Our overview of the recommended textbooks “Actively Learn” is that these materials are very biased—liberal, social justice-oriented, teaching materials use views through a racial lens, divisive, and often not age-appropriate for the material being used.

Additionally, there are major privacy concerns with the data collection of both teacher and student information that is also given to a 3rd party.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The Virginia Beach School Board was scheduled to vote on new English textbooks for grades 6-12 at a cost of over $2 million for Vendor 1 and $3 million for Vendor 2.  When it was pointed out to VBCPS that they didn’t give the proper notification to the public about the textbook adoptions, they halted the adoption and there is now an opportunity for the community to give input (now through March 27).

These are online textbooks and you have the opportunity to review them.  We encourage you to look at these books for yourself but we have highlighted some issues that we believe are important for the public to be aware of.  Remember when you are reviewing that these are English textbooks, not social science or civics.

Initially, there were 2 selections:  Vendor 1: “Actively Learn” by Achieve 3000 and Vendor 2: Into Literature.  The administration has recommended Vendor 1 to the School Board for approval.  SFVA does NOT support Vendor 1 due to the content.  SFVA has NOT reviewed Vendor 2; however, we do NOT support Vendor 2 due to cost ($3 million)

Below is a link for you to review and also provide feedback through a survey.  We also encourage you to share your views on these materials directly with the School Board by email: vbcpsschoolboard@googlegroups.com
